I just applied for a tv show that is going to have “expert moms” coach single moms on everything from general parenting issues to health, nutrition, self-care, lifestyle choices, etc.
One of the questions asked me to list my Best Qualities and my Worst Qualities.
At the time I was on facetime with my 22-year-old son Chaz. We both work at home – so sometimes we connect on facetime while we’re working when we both need another human in the room either in person or online to remind us that we’re not the only person on the planet…
I thought it would be best to get a reflection of some of my worst qualities from an expert on this issue – my kid (of course I don’t think I have any – lol!). So I asked Chaz to give me a list of some of my worst qualities.
After all, kids love telling you what’s wrong with you: mom, you repeat yourself all the time; mom you’re such a nag; mom, you’re so weird, etc.
As much as they love you, kids will ALWAYS find something wrong with their parents. So why not go right to the source?
Here’s how the conversation went….
ME: Okay, hit me with your best shot. Give me some of my worst qualities.
CHAZ: You sure you want me to tell you?
ME: I can take it.
CHAZ: Okay, here goes.
I brace myself and get ready for a barrage of my “worst qualities” according to Chaz.
CHAZ: You’re a perfectionist, you work too hard, and you overcook chicken.
ALI: That’s it? What about all the times I repeat myself that you hate, or nag you about taking your Vitamin D, or are a clean freak?
CHAZ: Oh yeah, those too. But mostly you’re a cool mama.
After everything my boy and I have been through together, if the worst I’ve done is overcook chicken, not too bad as far as parenting goes.
I’m just glad I didn’t ask this question years ago when he was a teenager…I’m sure the list would have been pages long…:)
