Dust
SETTING:

(author’s note: I saw the following quote on Facebook. Got me thinking…)
“I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” – Jack London
Ashes: So what’s your take on that Jack London quote about us?
Dust: Well, honestly, I don’t like being referred to as “stifled dry-rot”
Ashes: Pretty harsh if you ask me.
Dust: Yeah, what’s wrong with some of us just preferring to be a “sleepy and permanent planet’ than a friggin’ wild and crazy, out of control meteor soaring through space that could potentially wreak havoc on those around it.
Ashes: I see your point, but personally, I would choose “every atom of me in magnificent glow.”
Dust: I get that..
Ashes: Can’t we just both live the way that works best for us?
Dust: Jack London doesn’t think so. It’s very clear he prefers you over me.
Ashes: Well, he just doesn’t know you like I do.
Dust: And, according to the Bible, Genesis 2:7 “… the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” So Jack London doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Stifled dry-rot my ass!
Ashes: You tell ‘em!
Dust: We do kinda end up in the same place anyway, right?
Ashes: Yep, we both go right back into the earth, “ash to ash, dust to dust.”
Dust: So even though London prefers you, we’re good?
Ashes: Totally.
Dust: Cool.
