CHARACTERS:
Maggie, Hospital receptionist
Julie, patient’s friend
SETTING:
Front desk of a hospital
Julie: What do you mean I can’t go see her?
Maggie: I’m sorry but it’s hospital rules.
Julie: It’s hospital rules that I can’t go see a dear friend of mine?
Maggie: Only family allowed.
Julie: But I love her, she’s my best friend, she is my family.
Maggie: Sorry, but you’re not listed as next of kin.
Julie: Do you see her “loving family” here? Do you see any of her “next of kin” here to support her?
Maggie: Look, I’m really sorry.
Julie: Isn’t love enough?
Maggie: In a perfect world, it sure as hell would be. But we’re in a hospital, with hospital rules.
Julie: So rules trump love?
(beat)
Maggie: As much as it pains me to say so, rules trump love.
Julie: Can you do me a favor then? Can you tell her I was here and that I love her?
Maggie: I can do better than that.
Maggie takes out her cell phone.
Maggie: Record a message and I will show her how much you love her.
Julie (smiling): Thank you. Here’s to proving that love trumps rules.
