When A Craving Hits…

October 13, 2021 by Comments

I was CRAVING – and I mean craving to the point where I got in the car to take a 20-minute drive – a delicious homemade apple pie.

Not a crappy pie from Whole Foods or Shoprite or Wegmans.  A real, buttery, melt in your mouth, gotta add in vanilla ice cream, homemade apple pie.

I had a huge “to do” list which I wasn’t anywhere near completing or even had a chance of completing, but it didn’t matter.

I wanted homemade apple pie and I wanted it NOW.

But first, I had to walk the dog.

When I went outside I met my neighbors – a dad and his two wonderful daughters, aged 3 and 5.

I told them I was going to the farm and offered to get them a pie too!  Strawberry rhubarb was requested and I was more than happy to oblige.

So off I went to Wightman’s Farm, foaming at the mouth with anticipation of the pie I was about to eat all by myself.

I wasn’t going to share today.

20 Minutes down the road, about ¼ mile before the farm, I hit insane traffic on a one-way road that usually does not have traffic.  It would have taken me over 30 minutes to just get into the parking lot, and then there were probably no spaces left to speak of.

It was Saturday, and the first big pumpkin picking event at the Farm.

F**k!!!!!

I had to turn back and go home empty-handed.

I called my neighbor and relayed the devastating news.

I stopped at Whole Foods on the way back though and picked up some cupcakes for the girls so they wouldn’t have to experience the devastation of being denied dessert like I was experiencing at the moment.

The next day I’m sitting in my kitchen, still bummed believe it or not,  when someone rings the bell.

I open the door to my neighbor and his girls holding an apple pie for me!!!  They had gone out for their Sunday family day and on their way back stopped at Wightman’s to pick up my pie.

How friggin’ cool is that?!?!?!

So I had my apple pie with ice cream and almonds.  And yes, I did share it with my hubby!

I couldn’t eat the whole thing anyway – it was way too big for one person.  Even one person REALLY, REALLY, REALLY craving apple pie.

Small (and big!) acts of kindness always touch me deeply, but it’s the UNEXPECTED acts of kindness that warm me right in my apple pie heart….
