CHARACTERS
Beth, a mom
Sam, 7 years old
SETTING
Beth and Sam are conversing in the Beth’s driveway which separates their neighboring homes.
SAM: Where’s you son?
BETH: He just moved to California to go to a music school.
SAM: Oooh, that’s far.
BETH: Sure is.
SAM: How about your daughter?
BETH: Well, she’s an adult now and she lives on her own in the city.
SAM: So you have no more babies at home?
BETH: Nope. Not right now. But they’ll visit soon.
SAM: Do you miss your babies?
BETH: Yes of course! But I’m so happy that they’re doing what they like to do.
SAM: You must be SO LONELY without them.
BETH: I am sometimes.
SAM: Are they lonely without you?
BETH: It’s kind of different for them. I know they miss me but not the way I miss them. I’m a mommy after all.
SAM: Are you a mommy if your babies are not around?
BETH: I think once you have a baby it doesn’t matter where you or they are. You’re always a mommy and they’re always your baby.
SAM: Well, if you get lonely, my friend Lucy and I from down the street can come visit you.
BETH: That would be so awesome Sam. I’d love that!
SAM: I gotta check with my daddy first though.
BETH: Sounds like a plan.
SAM: Okay, gotta go home now. Bye!
BETH: Bye beautiful Sam.
All of my plays are based on my interactions with people, places, and ideas that I experience. Not word for word, but as a wrtier I get to play with the experience and present it in a way that it touched me, moved me, inspired me to share. Most of them relate to my theme of moving from “sucky to soulful” as well as positive ways in which we can show up in the world as people, as parents, and as spirits having a human experience.
