Back To School Isn’t Just About Your Kids!

a positive mental attitude creates health and well-beingMid to late August articles stop popping up about getting our kids ready for back to school.  The focus is generally about the kids and everything they are going to need to begin a new school year: their materials, as well as physical and emotional needs.

But what about us?  The parents?  It’s as much a shift for us as for the children.  Some of us can’t wait to get our kids back on a schedule and out of the house. Others mourn the loss of having their kids around.  Many of us experience both…

So besides all the running around and the production aspect of getting our kids off to a new school year, how about giving some time to paying attention to WHO we want to be as we shuffle into this annual, yet always, new transition.

My biggest life lesson has been around the concept that no matter what the life circumstance, I can always choose WHO I want to be and how I want to show up for life experiences.  The doing, doing, doing always happens, but now I am more conscious of who I am being as I am doing.  This awareness has been a game changer…

So who do you want to BE as you get you and your family ready for a new school year? What qualities do you want to ooze and radiate as September approaches? Here are some emotional qualities to think about committing to as you come out of your summer cocoon (of course, add in your own):

Peaceful, Fun, Accepting, Capable, Patient, Calm, Curious

PARENT Shiftitude PNGJust pick one quality and each morning when you awake say, “I am open to being (whichever quality you choose) today with whatever shows up in my life.”  Say it a couple of times to ground the commitment and then say it as many times as you remember during the day. 

And if you forget – no worries.  Just keep bringing your consciousness back to your commitment and stepping back into the practice.  Things are going to come up to test you. Stay true to your commitment and remember it’s not about changing the experience but WHO YOU ARE as experiences arise.

Then, the day you ship our kids off to school, take a couple of minutes and observe how this school year is a bit different than previous ones.  See if this year’s transition is more of one filled with grace, ease and flow.

By the way, this is an awesome daily practice in general.  Teach it as well to your kids! Role modeling BEING for our kids is one of the greatest gifts we can give them.  Especially as they, and we, navigate the unknown waters of a new school year….
